The frozen victim's fixed stare

The fixed stare is a hallmark of tonic immobility: extra-orbital eye muscles are also frozen, the victim can't look away. Recognizing this sign in self or others helps act fast.

Why it happens — the mechanism

Oculomotor nuclei III, IV, VI are inhibited under deep freeze. The victim stares at what the amygdala identified as threat. Universal — observed in mammals, birds, reptiles.
