Fight, flight, freeze: which response to choose?
You don't choose the response — your brain picks in 250ms. But training determines which response is available. Goal: keep all 3 options open — flee if possible, fight if necessary, never freeze.
Why it happens — the mechanism
3F Theory (Walter Cannon 1915, Bracha 2004): fight-flight-freeze + fawn + flop. The brain evaluates: distance, terrain, number, perceived strength, prior experience. Response is never 100% fight or 100% flight — it's a cocktail.
How the Avikzar System answers it
Yehouda says: 'Flee = victory. Fight = necessity. Freeze = failure'. The program prioritizes tactical flight (create opening then flee), not extended combat.
Yehouda Avikzar (10th Dan) — Freezing isn't your fault — it's your biology. But not training after experiencing one is your responsibility.
Frequently asked questions
What's the best response?
Flight — if possible. The final objective, even if you must fight first to make it possible.
