I freeze when I'm attacked — what to do?

Freezing (tonic immobility) is an automatic neurological response experienced by 70% of assault victims. It is neither cowardice nor a choice — it is the limbic system taking over when the prefrontal cortex shuts down under acute stress. The fix is not willpower, but training short motor reflexes that bypass the freeze.

Under mortal threat, the prefrontal cortex (decision, language, reasoning) is inhibited in 200 ms by the amygdala. The dorsal vagal nerve triggers tonic immobility: stiff muscles, blocked voice, fixed stare. It is an evolutionary legacy — a frozen animal looks dead to a predator. Stockholm 2016 study (Möller, n=298): 48% of rape victims experienced extreme sideration, and those who froze had 2x PTSD risk.
